However a quick escape from the overcrowded streets of Sofia can take you to the tranquility of Rila Monastery (the biggest Bulgarian monastery), Koprivshtitsa (picturesque settlement with well preserved houses from the Revival Period), Plovdiv (the second biggest Bulgarian city with charming old quarters) and the nearby Bachkovo Monastery (the second largest in Bulgaria), Veliko Tarnovo (the capital of The Second Bulgarian Kingdom), Arbanassi (museum village), Starosel (one of the biggest Thracian tombs discovered so far) etc.
